Packing and Measuring for an Apartment Move

Moving & settling in

Published by Apartments Texas · Updated

Measure the sofa and the stairwell before moving day. A packing order that protects your time and both deposits.

Use the questions below for the exact unit and dates you are considering, and record any point management has not confirmed.

Have you measured everything that has to fit?

Measure your largest furniture and every choke point on the route at both ends: doorways, hallways, stairwell turns, and the elevator cab.

Furniture measuring guides recommend measuring the diagonal depth of sofas and the height of headboards, and compare them with the complete delivery route.

Did you declutter before packing?

Every box you move costs time, money, and space in the new apartment. Decide what to keep, sell, donate or recycle before choosing packing supplies; preserve belongings and records you still need.

Be ruthless with duplicate kitchen gear, old linens, and furniture that only fit your last place. Storage in an apartment is precious; spend it on things you use.

Are you packing by priority?

Pack a clearly marked essentials box that travels with you: bedding, toiletries, medications, chargers, basic tools, toilet paper, and a day of clothes. Your first night should not depend on the truck.

Label every box with room and priority, keep hardware in taped bags on the furniture it belongs to, and disassemble what you can the night before rather than while movers wait.

How do you protect both apartments?

Use blankets on door frames, corner guards, and floor runners on moving day at both ends. Damage caused during a move can follow you into a deposit dispute.

Photograph walls and floors in both units before and after. These records can support later discussions; photos alone do not guarantee a deposit outcome.
