Lease Start Date Checklist: Before the Moving Truck Arrives

Lease decisions

Align possession, payments, utilities and access instead of treating the lease date as the whole move-in plan.

Confirm when possession begins

Ask for the date and time you can receive keys to the actual apartment. Check whether the lease start date, rent start date, and key pickup appointment match. If they differ, ask for a written explanation of the arrangement.

Confirm the apartment number and whether your walkthrough will be of that space or a model. Ask what happens if cleaning, repairs, or construction delay readiness. Do not assume management will pay for a hotel or movers without an applicable agreement or legal basis.

Clear the prerequisites

Request a list of items required before access: signed documents, move-in balance, insurance proof if required, utilities, identification, and any appointment. Verify payment instructions through a known management channel before sending funds.

Separate rent, deposits, fees, and credits on the statement. Ask about prorated rent and when the next full payment is due. Keep receipts so the office can resolve a missing credit without starting from a bank screenshot alone.

Coordinate the practical handover

Check office hours, elevator bookings, loading areas, parking, keys, fobs, and building entry. Arrange utility activation using the confirmed address and date. Plan a condition inspection before boxes cover floors and walls.

The Texas State Law Library emphasizes that the lease answers many practical questions and that tenants should retain the complete written agreement. Use that packet to verify promises about the start of occupancy. If the apartment is not delivered as agreed, document the issue and ask for the proposed remedy in writing; seek advice before assuming you can cancel, withhold money, or recover every delay cost automatically.
