Package Delivery Questions to Ask Before Renting an Apartment

Tours & amenities

Published by Apartments Texas · Updated

Lockers, office hours, and carrier access decide whether your packages are safe. What to ask before you sign.

Use the questions below for the exact unit and dates you are considering, and record any point management has not confirmed.

Where do packages actually go?

Ask which system applies to your unit: a staffed package room, self-serve lockers, the leasing office, or doorstep delivery. Then ask the hours and access rules for that system.

If deliveries go to your door, look at the door's visibility and lighting from walkways and the street, and ask whether carriers can enter the building or leave boxes at a shared entrance.

Does the system match your schedule?

Office-held packages only help if you can reach the office while it is open. Compare the office hours against your working hours and ask about after-hours pickup options.

For lockers, ask about size limits, how long a package may sit before it is returned, and where oversized deliveries like furniture end up.

How is security handled?

Ask how packages are logged, whether carriers need access codes, and whether cameras cover the package area.

Ask management directly how they handle a report of a lost or stolen package. Ask for the written process rather than judging coverage from an employee's confidence.

What carrier tools can back you up?

Check USPS Informed Delivery eligibility and features for your address; do not treat a notification as proof that an item has been physically delivered or secured.

Check whether your usual carriers let you add delivery instructions or redirect to pickup points, which matters most in communities with doorstep-only delivery.
