Balcony and Storage Rules to Ask About Before You Rent
Published by Apartments Texas · Updated
Balconies feel like bonus space until the lease addendum arrives. The storage and grill rules to ask about first.
Use the questions below for the exact unit and dates you are considering, and record any point management has not confirmed.
What may you keep outside?
Ask for the written balcony rules: what furniture, plants, storage, bikes, or drying laundry are allowed, since communities vary widely and appearance rules are common.
Ask about railings and fixtures too: hanging planters, shade sails, and mounted items are often regulated separately. If outdoor storage matters to you, confirm the rules before choosing the unit.
What are the grill rules?
Check the property's grilling rules and applicable local requirements. Ask for the written rule before you buy a grill, and ask whether the community offers a designated grilling station.
Consult the NFPA's grilling safety guidance as well as the property rules. Do not assume permission to own a grill means it may be used on your balcony.
What is the storm plan?
In storm-prone parts of Texas, anything left on a balcony can become a hazard in high winds. Ask about the community's storm procedures and how much notice you would get to clear the balcony.
Decide in advance where outdoor items would go on short notice, and check that you actually have the indoor space for them.
What storage alternatives exist?
If balcony storage is limited, ask about rentable storage units, bike rooms, or garage storage on site, plus cost and whether a waitlist exists.
Compare on-site storage pricing with nearby self-storage before assuming either is cheaper, and weigh the convenience of on-site access against the price difference.
